Woodfield School ran their 2nd Summer School in partnership with Greenhouse Sports. Multi-Sports Head Coach Dan O’Brien delivered the 3 week Summer School with TA support from Woodfield and Greenhouse staff.

The Summer School was set up in July 2014 to increase participation in sport and to improvepupil’s physical skills, inspiring and giving them the confidence to attend a local sports club in the community.

Week 1 targeted pupils with Moderate Learning Disabilities (MLD) developing their STEP skills in a safe, inclusive and enjoyable environment. In a recent consultation involving Woodfield pupils 85% of them stay at home, play computer games and watch TV. 68% of them are bored and want to play more sport. The Summer School allowed them to socialise, learn new skills and keep active during the break. Jaanzaib a KS3 pupil said “I love Summer School; I get to play lots of sport and see my friends over the summer holidays.” Pupils enjoyed a variety of activities including Dodgeball, Football, Tennis, Athletics, and Handball.

Week 2, another three day camp targeted Woodfield’s more complexed pupils with Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD) focusing on peer interaction and effective communication. A variety of visual aids were used so pupils felt fully engaged and comfortable. Pupils took part in Trampolining, Ten-Pin Bowling, Football, Athletics, Boccia and New Age Kurling.  Woodfield Teaching Assistant Chris said “It is great to host a SLD only sports camp as it builds confidence and allows them to access more sport”

Both weeks finished with a trip to Hyde Park where the pupils scootered around the park, playedshort cricket and accessed the inclusive adventure playground. Pupils had lunch in the park before traveling back to School where their parents / guardians picked them up.

The final week was a celebration week where all pupils were invited back to celebrate their hard work and achievements over the three weeks. A record breaking 24 pupils attended both days, an increase of 90% from August 2014. On Thursday 13th August, 14 pupils travelled back to Hyde Park for a celebration party where they enjoyed a picnic in the park courtesy of Greenhouse Sports. Pupils also walked around the park stopping off at the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain, Adventure Playground and the Serpentine.

All Pupils received a certificate for their hard work and dedication throughout the summer. Greenhouse Head Coach Dan O’Brien said “When I started at Woodfield in May 2014, Extra-Curricular activities and Community engagement were my main priorities. It is great to see so many pupils accessing more sport outside of School with the support from the School being tremendous” Dan aims to continue and grow sport at Woodfield inspiring more pupils to get involved and play more Sport.
