For the spring term, the 6th form students have introduced an afternoon tea experience for the pupils of Woodfield School.  Each week, a different class will get to enjoy the experience on a Wednesday afternoon.

The 6th form pupils spend the morning preparing food ready to be served in the afternoon.  The first job of the day is to prepare the bread by making dough, kneading it and letting it prove.  The bread is then baked and ready to be cut for smoked salmon sandwiches as well as cucumber, soft cheese and tomato sandwiches.

A traditional afternoon tea always consists of a cream tea (a scone split in the middle with jam and cream although in which order depends whether you prefer to follow the Devon or Cornish way!)

Along with the sandwiches and scones, a selection of cakes also top off the stands. The chocolate brownies seem to be rather popular with the groups.  The week these photographs were taken, we also made lemon shortbread and orange frosted cupcakes.

Daniel and Matthew both excelled at being servers and enjoyed being part of the whole experience of making tea and ensuring all pupils were having a good time.

The feedback given has been fantastic from staff as well as the pupils.  Currently, the rest of the term is booked up with classes but as many requests have been made since then, it may continue after Easter.

The afternoon tea is not only an experience for the other pupils but it gives the 6th form caterer’s a real sense of pride that all their hard work is being enjoyed by everyone.  Not only are they developing their catering skills but they are learning how to communicate with pupils who they may not necessarily have a lot of day to day contact with and most importantly, skills which they are able to take with them to college and the workplace.
