Gardening

These vocational course are planned and delivered to develop the pupil's awareness and understanding of the opportunites that exist for them in the horticulture sector. Each unit is practical in nature, and we give every opportunity to 'get your hands dirty' and discover 'how green your thumb is'!


The of units of work that pupils undertake include a selection of:

 

83504 Gardening

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • recognise and use at least five manual tools which are used for gardening with verbal and/or physical prompts;
  • recognise at least three power tools which are used in the garden, e.g. a lawnmower, a strimmer;
  • recognise appropriate clothing used for gardening, eg wellingtons, overalls;
  • take a cutting and grow plants from seed with verbal and/or physical prompts;
  • help to keep a garden tidy with verbal and/or physical prompts;
  • show knowledge of the names of at least four plant families including fruit, vegetables and flowers;
  • show knowledge of basic health and safety in the garden, e.g. care with chemicals, care with power and hand tools, with verbal and/or physical prompts;
  • experience helping to plan a garden layout with verbal and/or physical prompts.

 

76055 Planting Bulbs in Pots

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • select a suitable plant pot in which to plant the bulbs;
  • prepare the plant pot with drainage;
  • add the correct amount of bulb fibre;
  • place the bulbs in the fibre according to instructions on the packet;
  • place the bulbs in an appropriate growing place.

 

70876 Growing Plants from Seeds

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • prepare a plant pot with compost;
  • sow the seeds correctly into the pot;
  • take care of seeds during growth by making sure they have adequate heat, light and water;
  • plant on the seedlings;
  • plant the seedlings outside when large enough;
  • experienced taking part in the process of growing at least one plant from seed.

 

73738 Using Plants in Pots Baskets

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • plan and discuss suitable types of plants for a project;
  • make a choice of plants for specific containers, i.e. pots, baskets and flowerbeds;
  • prepare for the activity by putting on suitable clothing;
  • prepare and sort equipment needed for the task;
  • fill the pots and baskets with the necessary soil or peat;
  • place plants in the correct position in order that overcrowding does not take place;
  • experienced taking part in the planning and preparation of the project;
  • making choices;
  • handling money sensory stimulation, i.e. smell, touch and visual.

 

76985 Creating a Floral Hanging

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • line the basket with appropriate lining material;
  • fill the basket with compost;
  • select appropriate flowers;
  • plant the flowers into the compost;
  • add water and fertiliser to the basket;
  • show knowledge of the names of at least three different flowers that can be used in a hanging basket;
  • show knowledge of why water and fertiliser are required for flowers to grow.

 

75359 Introduction to Gardening

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • prepare the land for planting seeds and plants;
  • plant seeds and plants according to instructions;
  • maintain the plot over a growing season;
  • identify weeds which appear and remove them;
  • lift or pick crops;
  • shown knowledge of the processes required to maintain the area;
  • shown knowledge of safety procedures that need to be observed when working in the garden;
  • experience a weekly visit to the school garden over a six week period weather permitting.
