Hair and Beauty

These vocational course are planned and delivered to develop the student's awareness and understanding of the the type of work one may undertake in a beauty salon. Pupils will work in the schools own salon, as well as undertake visits to working salons and the College of North West London. Pupils also provide services such as manicures to members of the school community one lunchtime a week.


The of units of work that pupils will undertake are:

 

70206 Salon Hairdressing

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • follow health and safety requirements when dealing with materials and equipment used in a hairdressing salon;
  • shampoo a model's hair;
  • massage a model's head;
  • blow dry a model's hair;
  • dress long hair on a head block or model;
  • show knowledge of at least three health and safety issues in a hairdressing salon.

 

90530 Blow Drying and Straightening Hair

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • prepare the hair for a blow dry or for being straightened;
  • section the hair into manageable areas;
  • choose the correct brush for the hair from a variety of brushes;
  • blow dry the hair into two styles;
  • straighten the hair into two styles.

 

71530 Manicure Procedures

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to;

  • follow appropriate health and safety procedures, eg sanitise or wash hands;
  • remove all traces of old nail varnish from client's nails using varnish remover;
  • apply and massage a small amount of cuticle cream into the cuticle area;
  • push back cuticles using appropriate tools, eg a hoof stick, cuticle machine;
  • carry out a hand and arm massage;
  • buff the nail plates;
  • apply a base coat to nails: apply a coat of colour to nails;
  • apply a top coat.

 

71528 Shampooing and Rinsing Hair

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • put a towel or a protective cape around the shoulders;
  • make sure the water is at the correct temperature and use a jug or shower spray to wet the hair;
  • apply the correct amount of shampoo to the wet hair;
  • massage the shampoo into the hair, making sure all of the scalp is massaged;
  • rinse out all the shampoo;
  • apply correct amount of conditioner into the wet hair;
  • massage the conditioner into the wet hair;
  • rinse out conditioner;
  • use a hair dryer to dry hair.

 

90531 Styling Long and Short Hair

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • create a hair style on a model for long hair;
  • create a hair style on a model for short hair;
  • choose two pictures of hair styles from resources and copy the styles onto the client's hair.
