Health and Social Care

These vocational course are planned and delivered to develop the student's awareness and understanding of first aid, health and careers in health and social care.


The of units of work that pupils will undertake are:

 

72683 Introduction to First Aid

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • check, in a simulated situation, that the casualty is breathing;
  • find a pulse and measure its rate;
  • check, in a simulated situation, the level of consciousness;
  • place a person in the recovery position;
  • know the steps to be taken on arriving at a specified emergency;
  • know at least one cause of a burn and one cause of a scald.

 

St432 Jobs in Health and Social Care

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • produce a list of at least three jobs in health and social care;
  • produce a job description of one chosen job, outlining the qualifications, personal qualities and training required;
  • write a letter of application for the chosen job;
  • produce a CV for the chosen job;
  • prepare for a mock interview for the chosen job by identifying own strengths and weaknesses;
  • prepare answers to at least five given questions which might be asked at the interview;
  • evaluate own performance in the mock interview;
  • take part in the mock interview for the chosen job.

 

84151 Health Matters

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • plan a balanced menu for a day;
  • identify three factors which can cause stress;
  • the three aspects of health, ie mental, physical and social;
  • state at least two lifestyle choices that can affect health;
  • identify four food groups and their role in diet;
  • state at least one danger associated with eating too much fat;
  • say two diseases associated with smoking;
  • recall two diseases associated with excessive drinking of alcohol;
  • state three benefits of regular exercise;
  • state three ways of coping with stress.

 

76362 Healthy Lifestyle

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • communicate three essentials for a healthy body;
  • identify three poor eating habits;
  • identify three physical activities which promote fitness;
  • identify the role of four given health care services;
  • communicate one reason why protection from the sun is important.

 

71423 Health and Hygiene: Promoting Good Health

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • request and attend a medical appointment, eg dentist, doctors;
  • identify six items used to keep self clean;
  • state the importance of keeping clean and maintaining good personal hygiene;
  • recall the importance of a healthy balanced diet;
  • talk about the importance and benefits of taking exercise regularly;
  • say how to care for hands, teeth, hair and feet;
  • take part in a discussion about the dangers of smoking, using substances and drinking alcohol to excess;
  • take part in a discussion about health and hygiene and its effects on others.

 

70303 Basic First Aid

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • participate in a discussion about the basic objectives of first aid and when first aid should be given;
  • identify the four objectives of first aid;
  • identify the location of the first aid box in own household and/or an appropriate location;
  • name at least three items from a first aid box and describe their uses;
  • identify at least five medical conditions;
  • identify at least five situations or conditions that may require first aid;
  • identify how to administer basic first aid to at least two of the above conditions;
  • recognise at least two situations when administering first aid is not appropriate.
