Sport & Fitness

These Vocational courses are planned and delivered to develop pupil’s awareness of their own health and fitness. Pupils will take part in multi stage fitness test both at school and when visiting the local gym.  Pupils will complete the units listed below.

 

71140 Health Related Exercise: Heart Health

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • perform an appropriate warm up before and cool down after exercise

  • locate own pulse with peer support

  • monitor heart rate and breathing rate before, during and after exercise

  • monitor recovery rate after exercise

  • experience the effects of exercise on heart rate and breathing rate

  • how to improve heart health through physical exercise

  • feel the effects of exercise on the heart

  • participate in the multi-stage fitness test

  • take part in a discussion on heart health, to identify the effects of exercise on the body

 

93175 Health Related Exercise: Muscle Health

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • perform an appropriate warm up before, and cool down after, exercise

  • perform at least four exercises that identify the following four components of muscle fitness: (a) speed, eg running, (b) strength, eg weights, sit-ups, press-ups, (c) suppleness, eg stretches, (d) stamina, eg star jumps, bar jumps, steps

  • show intrinsic motivation towards general fitness and its contribution to a healthy lifestyle

  • design an effective personal circuit using basic equipment

  • identify at least three beneficial effects of physical exercise and how physical exercise contributes to personal wellbeing, eg reducing levels of stress, helping to regulate sleep, reducing levels of obesity, having a more positive outlook on life, increasing in bone density

  • feel the effects of exercise on the major muscle groups

  • participate in at least four exercises that develop speed, strength, suppleness and stamina

 

70115 Introduction to Fitness Training

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

identify and bring the correct clothing and equipment needed for a visit to a gym, on three occasions

prepare for exercise by warming the body up

use at least five pieces of equipment in the gym per session, following a tutor-prepared exercise programme

operate gym equipment safely

follow safety procedures in the gym and be aware of other users

wipe down the equipment after use and leave it ready for other users

state at least two health-related benefits of regular exercise

follow an exercise programme for 5 weeks

 

71007 Following a Multi-Gym fitness programme

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • use the gym in a safe and appropriate way on at least six occasions

  • identify at least five fitness machines, eg the treadmill

  • stop the activity when tired

  • follow turn taking routines

  • follow a personal fitness programme

  • take part in regular multi-gym fitness sessions with other students using a community facility.

 

 

99557 Circuit Training

In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • complete at least two warm up stretches

  • move safely from one circuit station to another

  • perform at least three exercises with adult instruction

  • perform one exercise continuously for twenty seconds

  • complete at least two cool down stretches
