Transition to Mainstream

Working with Alperton Community School

Woodfield is committed to a programme with Alperton Community School where up to ten pupils will move to the mainstream school at the start of KS4. Pupils will be thoroughly prepared during year 9. Parents will be consulted with and the process will be completed via the Annual Review at the end of Year 9. This programme commenced in the 2011-2012 school year, with the first cohort commencing at Alperton in September 2012.

For integration to succeed we believe the pupil should have:

  • literacy skills comparable to some mainstream pupils

  • attainment in other areas of the curriculum comparable to some mainstream pupils

  • social skills and the ability to sustain friendships with other pupils

  • the ability to follow school routines independently e.g. get to the lesson on time and with the correct equipment

  • a sufficiently mature and responsible attitude to be an independent traveller or to become an independent traveller by the time integration begins

The process

  • pupils will be part of the one Year 9 tutor group

  • pupils will go to Alperton Community School every Tuesday afternoon for identified lessons

  • pupils will work with their mainstream peers, attend assemblies, sports day and an induction week in July

  • pupils will be travel trained in order to be independent in readiness for the transition

  • pupils will wear the Alperton Uniform on the visits to the school each week;

  • parents will be taken on a tour of the school in the Spring term

  • teachers from Alperton will work with teachers at Woodfield to understand the learning needs of all the pupils who transfer to Alperton
