Anthony's Job at Transport for London

Anthony will work for TfL customer services on an eleven week work placement programme.

Anthony started at Woodfield School in September 2010, joining us for the beginning of year 8. He left part of the way through year 14 after being accepted into the Transport for London (TfL) Work Placement Programme.

Anthony will work for TfL customer services on an eleven week work placement programme. This was arranged for him by Paul Talbot (Head of Sixth Form) and Anna Nicholl (Steps into Work Liaison Officer). Anthony's mum was also involved all the way through, and is a big fan of the scheme.

Anthony was one of the select few who were accepted into the TfL Scheme, as there were only 12 places on offer in the whole of London.

The process began in May 2016, and consisted of:

  • Anthony showing an expression of interest

  • Starting his application process

  • Taking part in a literacy and numeracy assessment

  • Attending an introductory interview

  • Undertaking a panel interview

All through this process, Anthony continued his studies and received some specific help such as coaching on interview techniques whilst in Woodfield Sixth Form .

Anthony did very well through every step of the process and was extremely pleased and proud when he heard his application had been successful.

During his work placement, Anthony will be working with his manager and a buddy.  He has a TfL email address and has already emailed his manager and his buddy.

Anthony will be working in the Southwark at the TfL building, way up on the 7th floor. He has organised suitable attire for his placement (includes a shirt and tie, black trousers and black shoes). He has independently work out his travel arrangements, and will travel to his work placement by tube on the Bakerloo line from Kilburn Park to Baker Street and change for the Jubilee line to Southwark and walk for 2 minutes. He is very prepared! He will bring a packed lunch and money for each day.

He will start work at 10 a.m. and finish at 2 p.m with a lunch break. He will be starting this week. He has already completed a three week induction programme which he enjoyed immensely. This allowed him to meet other students are on the programme, and he has made friends already. There are five other student all together(a mix of men and women), two 18 year olds and two students who are a little older.

Anthony will be working in the customer services department, where his duties include answering the phone and dealing with customer queries in a professional manner.  He knows he will need to be understanding when dealing with customers that are agitated. Anthony will also be taking meeting room bookings. He will also work in a tube station of his own choice as part of the 11 weeks placement.

Anthony is hoping to do his best at this work placement and fingers crossed, if all goes well, there might be an opportunity for a job at the end with London Underground or Transport for London.

Anthony came into school in February to tell us all about this and was beaming with confidence, which was lovely to see. He said that some of the things he learnt at Woodfield that have helped him included:

  • Literacy and Numeracy Skills
  • Socialising with others (playing sport)
  • Taking more responsibility as he got older (especially in Sixth Form)
  • Gaining confidence in himself
  • Travel Training

We look forward to seeing Anthony during and after he completes his programme and finding out his progress.
