Independent Living
Independent living gives pupils the opportunity to develop their key life skills. This course uses a hands-on approach to help pupils build their independence, from home tasks such as tying shoe-laces and using the washing machine to managing money and planning outings in the local area, all with an emphasis on team-work, safety and self-reliance.
Pupils will complete the units listed below.
90286 Cleaning Surfaces
In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
- locate and collect the equipment required for cleaning surfaces;
- locate the surfaces to be cleaned, e.g. table, walls;
- choose the first surface to clean;
- dry wipe the surface and dispose of any debris appropriately;
- choose the appropriate polish or cleaning agent for the surface;
- apply the appropriate polish or cleaning agent to the surface;
- wipe the polish or cleaning agent from the surface;
- repeat the above procedure for other surfaces, if necessary, until the cleaning is complete;
- return all the equipment used to the original location.
82183 Changing Bed Linen
In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
- locate fresh bed linen in order to change a bed;
- remove dirty linen and replace with fresh bed linen;
- place the dirty linen in the wash basket;
- remove and fit a bed sheet and quilt;
- how often a bed needs changing to maintain good personal hygiene;
- demonstrate the easiest way to fit and remove a quilt cover, both with and without assistance.
76640 Using a Cafe
In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
- enter a café and find a suitable table;
- choose a drink from the menu;
- ask for the bill when ready to leave;
- pay the bill;
- get a receipt and check the change;
- leave the café.
87693 Ironing a T-Shirt
In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
- erect an ironing board with physical assistance;
- plug in an iron and select the correct temperature to iron a given T-shirt;
- iron the T-shirt;
- put away the ironing board and iron with physical assistance;
- working in a safe manner using an iron and ironing board.
93761 Planning and Making a Shopping Trip
In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
- select money appropriate for proposed purchase and count change in a classroom setting;
- make a suitable shopping list of at least three items;
- estimate the cost of each item;
- estimate the total cost;
- ensure there is sufficient money for purchase;
- select or ask for correct items in the shop;
- purchase the shopping, giving appropriate money, under supervision if required;
- check change;
- pack the shopping safely;
- appropriate language to complete the task;
- coins and notes in current use.
77931 Using a Post Office to buy stationery and send a letter
In successfully completing this unit the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
- write an informal letter to a friend;
- prepare a shopping list of the services and the items required at the post office;
- wait in the correct place until a teller is free;
- ask for a first class stamp;
- weigh the letter;
- tender sufficient money to pay for the stamp;
- check the change is correct;
- affix the stamp in the correct place on the envelope;
- post the letter;
- check the time of the next collection.
